Our Dove & Quail Diet includes a tasty and nutritious assortment of enzyme rich (enzymes are CRUCIAL in aiding the digestion and assimilation of most nutrients), Grass Seeds, Oil Seeds and Whole Grain. Grass Seeds are generally valued nutritionally for their easily digestible carbohydrates, protein, soluble fiber (which helps promote a healthy digestive tract), natural enzyme activity and some vitamins and minerals. White Proso Millet is an excellent source of easily digestible carbohydrates, protein, some B-complex vitamins, particularly Niacin, minerals, and is low in fat. Golden German Millet is part of the “fox tail” family of millet, commonly known as “Finch Millet” (Spray Millet is part of the fox tail family). These very small seeds are relished by both doves and quail. Golden German Millet is an excellent source of easily digestible carbohydrates, protein, some B-complex vitamins, minerals and is low in fat. Canary Grass Seed is another good source of carbohydrates and is high in protein, soluble fiber and low in fat. Whole Grains are generally valued nutritionally for their high protein content, carbohydrates, high soluble fiber, natural enzyme activity, some vitamins, minerals, and are low in fat. Whole Wheat (including the wheat germ) is a good source of fiber, carbohydrates, is low in fat with some B-complex vitamins, particularly Niacin, vitamin E, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc and Selenium. Buckwheat (technically a fruit not a grain) is high in complex carbohydrates, protein, soluble fiber, some B-complex vitamins, particularly, Niacin, vitamin E, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc and Selenium. Corn is a rich source of carbohydrates and protein with appreciable amounts of B-complex vitamins, A & E, Sodium, Selenium and the essential amino acids. Oil Seeds are generally valued nutritionally for their protein, natural enzyme activity and essential mono & polyunsaturated fatty acids (which help promote healthy skin and feathers).

Mix 141 (QUAIL & PHEASANT HABITAT MIX) is designed for the environmental conditions of the Northern Tier States and for sites with dry to moist soils. Flowering period and flower colors are coordinated for full season variety. The amount of seed of each species in the mix has been calculated using the number of seeds per pound of each species factored by establishment parameters. Mix 141 contains the following 7 native grass species and 16 native wildflower species: Indian Grass, Little Bluestem, Canada Wild Rye, Side Oats Grama, Big Bluestem, Tall Dropseed, Purple Top, Lance Leaved Coreopsis, Purple Prairie Clover, Blackeyed Susan, Ohio Spiderwort, Ragweed, Partridge Pea, Illinois Bundleflower, Purple Coneflower, False Sunflower, Spiked Blazing Star, Bergamot, Greyheaded Coneflower, Canada Tick Trefoil, Maximilian Sunflower, Roundheaded Lespedeza, and Rigid Goldenrod.

Hancock’s Quail Seed Mix provides both seed and cover for quail. We added millets to the mix to add variety and cover for the legumes. The millet will also serve as a summer feed for quail and help restrict grasses while the Sunflowers, Sorghum and Alyce Clover slowly begin to grow. Mixture: Hancock’s Quail Seed Mix contains: 25% Brown Top Millet 25% Dove Proso Millet 25% Japanese Millet 12.5% WGF Sorghum 12.5% Alyce Clover~ Hancock’s Quail Seed Mix food plot should be planted any time after the last chance of frost in the spring, through the summer. Quail food plots should not only include seed producing species but also cover. Quail are more likely to utilize your food plot if they feel comfortable. Try not to plant food plots for quail in the wide open, if possible. Planting around heavy cover, trees, short pines, and palmetto flats will result in more food plot activity from your quail. Remove all old vegetation to prepare a clean seedbed by means of a disc. Drag area to loosen and level any hard or uneven spots if necessary. Apply a slow-release starter fertilizer at the recommended rate of 250 lbs. per acre. Fertilize three times a year for best results. Broadcast seed at recommended rate. Drag or roll lightly to cover the seed no more than 1/4 in. below surface. If you are overseeding an existing area, it is pertinent to mow existing grass low and incorporate seed 1/4 in. into soil for best results. Apply irrigation for approximately 30 minutes each evening until soil is damp, and germination has occurred. Irrigate newly-seeded areas every other day until the sprout reaches 6 in., then water recommended three times a week if needed.
